1794 JOHN SEYMOUR LUCAS SPECTACLES GEORGIAN SILVER READING PAINTING GLASSES :
$573.18

This is for a fabulous and totally unique pair ofGeorgiansterling silver glasses dated to 1794. The glasses themselves are a very unusual shape for this era, they are flat at the top, but not half moon and they have a very interesting history attached to them. The silver arms are engraved \'Master Seymour Lucas, painter\' which refers to John Seymour Lucas, a Victorian English historical and portrait painter, as well as an accomplished theatrical costume designer. The other arm has the Shakespeareanquote from Henry V...\' Tut I have the Best Armour of the World\', this i am guessing refers to Lucas\'s profession as a painter and the cloak of protection that offered from the more mundane aspects of Victorian life. The glasses are hallmarked to London 1794, so someone owned them a little before Lucas, alas i dont think we will ever know who, maybe someone in the family, but he obviously found them either perfectly fit for use as a painter, or he was sentimentallyattached to them enough to have them engraved with his name and the quote. Very interesting either way, and the glasses themselves are as well because of the highly unusual shape and the date. The silver carries a set of English sterling silver hallmarks dating them to London 1794 and they are in fabulous condition considering their age, there are no splits in the silver and no cracks in the lenses, there is a the usual little bit of play in the hinges on the arms but thats all. The lenses are magnified and they measure 113mm (4.5\") across, by 30mm (1.25\") x 25mm (1\") at the lenses.
