1850 Two-Needle, Pre Morse Telegraph From London & Northwestern Railway * Nice:
$479.74

Make sure to check out all of my auctions after you\'ve looked at this one. I\'m listing another eclectic assortment of early electro-mechanical gadgetry, and I suspect that there will be something of interest to just about everyone.
Here\'s an ancient two needle telegraph from the London and Northwestern Railway. Beginning in the late 1830\'s, several years prior to the advent of dot-and-dash Morse Code telegraphy in the USA, these combined sending and receiving stations -- based on a patent by the inventors William Cooke and Charles Wheatsone -- were used by station masters to communicate track conditions on the British railroads.
Condition of this example is very good to excellent throughout. All three electromagnets check okay for continuity, and the gong still sounds when a small electrical charge is applied. The cabinet is in excellent condition overall, given its age, with normal signs of use and wear, but no evidence of damage or neglect, and no signs of repairs. The glass window appears to be original and is in excellent, undamaged condition. The cabinet finish is original, and none of the metal parts have been polished, re-plated or otherwise primped.
Internal wiring appears to be sound. Some of the wiring appears to date to the 1900\'s, which is not unusual, as many of these devices were still in use on railroads well into the 20th century. The lock is original and operational, but the skeleton key has been replaced. Both indicator needles are original and undamaged. The indicator panel is original and undamaged. There is no manufacturer\'s mark on the apparatus, but the blind stamp in the case indicates the device was the property of the London & Northwestern Railway.
Apparatus measures approximately 24\" in height. Shipping weight, properly packed, will be approximately 45 lb. The case appears to be made of solid oak. It is quite heavy.That\'s about it. Iwill package the device carefully and properly, and Ican assure you thatit willshow upat your doorstepin the samefine condition in which it leaves mine. I have been shipping antique phonographs and radios for years, and if you check my feedback, you\'ll see that I know how to do it correctly. Overseas customers may remit payment with Paypal only. Auction participants with no prior ebay history, or with private feedback, should contact me before placing a bid.
