Superb1857 - antique brass Victorian Monoviewer. Made by R. & J. Beck Ltd, London. Serial number :- 7964387
On the front there is an engraved image of a 3-masted Tall Ship andMaker\'s name with thedate year 1857. On the back is an engraved quote from the log of Christopher Columbus 1492 :-
\"Four Boats Wain - Birds Came To The Ship, A Great Sign Of Land\"
Measures 4 inches long. Lever to open the casing operates perfectly. The central manual focus adjustment spindle works smoothly in both directions. The small and large glass lenses are excellent. No chips or cracks.
Incredibly after more than 155 years, the brass body of the monviewer has no dinks or dents at all. Perfect condition. I never clean antique items as many collectors prefer the appearance to be appropriate to the great age and previous use. This is quite dirty but this would polish well if so required. All the engraving and the wording are completely clear as it is.
R. & J. Beck was founded in 1843 and established a reputation during the 19th century as one of the most renown English lens and optical equipment makers. This is a top quality example of their work.
