1959 ENICAR SHERPA DIVETTE AUTOMATIC 17 JEWELS AR1034 EZR MOVEMENT DIVE WATCH:
$590
On
May 18, 1956, a Swiss expedition reached the summit of the Himalayan Lhotse
Mountains (8516m) and the bordering summit of Mount Everest (8848m) on May 23,
1956. This was only the second time the summit of Everest was reached. All
expedition members were wearing Enicar Seapearl watches. The key to the success
of the Enicar Seapearl model was the ruggedness of the hand wind movement and
use of the Swiss patent #98243 Bayonet type closure compressor case made by the
Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA) company. The earliest Seapearl marked (back and/or
dial) model watch with the bayonet type compressor case with EPSA STOP marking
I know of is dated 10-55.The reliability of the Seapearl watch paralleled the
reliability of the Nepalese Sherpa’s which led Enicar to register the name
Sherpa on November 6, 1956. The early Seapearl and Sherpa models used hand wind
movements and were not equipped with a rotating bezel.
This
1959 dated Enicar Sherpa Divette Automatic model is one of the early series of
Enicar single stem/crown Sherpa dive watches made using the EPSA Swiss Patent #
314962 Enicar bayonet type closure super compressor case. The super compressor
case is probably more familiar to Enicar collectors with the double stem/crown
Sherpa Guide/GMT models. The inside of the case back is marked/dated with the
Diver Helmet over EPSA Swiss Case Patented + 314962. Enicar Watch Co. 12-59.
The outside of the case back has the Enicar 4 leaf clover grid design marked
Enicar inside with Sherpa above and Seapearl below. The perimeter of the back
is marked Waterproof Swiss Ultrasonic 100/116 BaANXS Brevet + 314962 Stainless Steel
Automatic Incabloc. The case designation features breakdown as follows:
The
black dial has the early Enicar on top of the Saturn logo, Ultrasonic, Sherpa Divette,
Automatic, Swiss Made markings. The truncated triangular hour markers have
radium on the outside marker end at 3,6,9 and 12 and on the inside triangle
marker ends at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 and 11. The luminescence of the radium has long
gone due to the age of the watch. The watch has the original hands with radium
on the inside. The stainless steel case measures 36mm wide without the crown, 44mm
lug end to lug end and takes an 18mm wide band. The AR 1034 automatic movement
is marked Seventeen 17 Jewels Enicar Watch Co. Swiss Unadjusted EZR and runs
well. Movements intended for the US market are stamped with the EZR Swiss Export
Code. The watch has the original crown with the correct Sherpa EPSA compressor
cross hatch design with the Enicar logo. The watch has the correct style black
bezel marked 10, 20, 40, and 50 but is tight and doesn’t rotate by hand. Watch
includes an original new old stock 18mm Tropic MOD. DEP. Swiss Made watch band
with ACER clasp. Overall length of band and watch is 9 1/4”. The crystal is
clean and clear with minor marks. The watch sets, winds, runs and keeps good
time. Due to the age of the watch it is not guaranteed to be water resistant.
