OnMay 18, 1956, a Swiss expedition reached the summit of the Himalayan LhotseMountains (8516m) and the bordering summit of Mount Everest (8848m) on May 23,1956. This was only the second time the summit of Everest was reached. Allexpedition members were wearing Enicar Seapearl watches. The key to the successof the Enicar Seapearl model was the ruggedness of the hand wind movement anduse of the Swiss patent #98243 Bayonet type closure compressor case made by theErvin Piquerez SA (EPSA) company. The earliest Seapearl marked (back and/ordial) model watch with the bayonet type compressor case with EPSA STOP markingI know of is dated 10-55.The reliability of the Seapearl watch paralleled thereliability of the Nepalese Sherpa’s which led Enicar to register the nameSherpa on November 6, 1956. The early Seapearl and Sherpa models used hand windmovements and were not equipped with a rotating bezel.
This1959 dated Enicar Sherpa Divette Automatic model is one of the early series ofEnicar single stem/crown Sherpa dive watches made using the EPSA Swiss Patent #314962 Enicar bayonet type closure super compressor case. The super compressorcase is probably more familiar to Enicar collectors with the double stem/crownSherpa Guide/GMT models. The inside of the case back is marked/dated with theDiver Helmet over EPSA Swiss Case Patented + 314962. Enicar Watch Co. 12-59.The outside of the case back has the Enicar 4 leaf clover grid design markedEnicar inside with Sherpa above and Seapearl below. The perimeter of the backis marked Waterproof Swiss Ultrasonic 100/116 BaANXS Brevet + 314962 Stainless SteelAutomatic Incabloc. The case designation features breakdown as follows:

Theblack dial has the early Enicar on top of the Saturn logo, Ultrasonic, Sherpa Divette,Automatic, Swiss Made markings. The truncated triangular hour markers haveradium on the outside marker end at 3,6,9 and 12 and on the inside trianglemarker ends at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 and 11. The luminescence of the radium has longgone due to the age of the watch. The watch has the original hands with radiumon the inside. The stainless steel case measures 36mm wide without the crown, 44mmlug end to lug end and takes an 18mm wide band. The AR 1034 automatic movementis marked Seventeen 17 Jewels Enicar Watch Co. Swiss Unadjusted EZR and runswell. Movements intended for the US market are stamped with the EZR Swiss ExportCode. The watch has the original crown with the correct Sherpa EPSA compressorcross hatch design with the Enicar logo. The watch has the correct style blackbezel marked 10, 20, 40, and 50 but is tight and doesn’t rotate by hand. Watchincludes an original new old stock 18mm Tropic MOD. DEP. Swiss Made watch bandwith ACER clasp. Overall length of band and watch is 9 1/4”. The crystal isclean and clear with minor marks. The watch sets, winds, runs and keeps goodtime. Due to the age of the watch it is not guaranteed to be water resistant.
