Edmund 8” Fork Mount Telescope With RKE Eyepieces in Case:
Please check out my new book lot!
Up for sale from my husband’s estate is this Edmund Scientific 8” f/5 fork-mounted reflector telescope, from the early 1980’s, along with a complete set of Edmund Scientific RKE eyepieces in their original Edmund box. Condition of both telescope and eyepieces is excellent.
The telescope was purchased in 2012 from the son of a man who had bought it new in 1982, used it twice then put it away. It was kept in storage from that time until my husband purchased it. He disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled the entire instrument, and detailed the entire process on website, in the thread entitled “Edmund Scientific 8" f/5 (4001)”, under the username “Amicus Sidera”.Please refer to that forum thread for many detailed photos.
This beautiful, striking-looking telescope is stock and original except for the finder eyepiece and diagonal, which were missing when purchased and were replaced, and the rear mirror cell screws, which were replaced with low-profile ones to make assembling the telescope considerably easier. The clock drive works, uses 117v AC house current and requires a 3-conductor grounded extension cord and a ground-fault interrupter circuitfor safety while in use outdoors. The hour setting circle is driven along with the telescope, so needs setting only once per night, and there is a fine-adjust declination control. My husband’s notes say that the the mirror had a small amount of “spherical abberation”, but that it otherwise worked fairly well, and the surface coating appears to be in good condition. Has a large 2” focuser and extension tubes for use with it. Printed matter and ephemera that accompanied the telescope from the factory is included, consisting of the assembly instructions for both the telescope and mount, a brochure entitled “Star Checking Your Edmund Telescope” and the warranty card. Even if you aren’t into astronomyper se, think what an addition this would make to a mid-century modern home, or for display or advertising use!
The set of RKE eyepieces are marked 28mm, 21.5mm, 15mm, 12mm and 8mm, along with a 2.5X RKE Barlow. The 28mm has the original Edmund Scientific latex rubber eye cup. The lenses and their housings are very clean, no smudges, but do have some tiny dust particles on them that I didn’t try cleaning off.
The eyepieces come in the original dark blue Edmund Scientific case with black handle. The original foam lining had deteriorated, so new camera case-type foam was used, cut to the original pattern. The hinge on the plastic snap closure is cracked, but holding for now.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to obtain this rare vintage instrument, with its entire complement of matching eyepieces, in such pristine condition. Correspondence my husband had with former staff members at Edmund Scientific indicated that only around 1000 or so of these telescopes were produced, between 1979 and 1982.
This telescope and eyepieces are sold together as a set, and will not be sold separately under any circumstances. Also, please don’t ask if I’ll ship the set to you, as due to their size, weight and fragility these items are pick-up only.
Can be picked up in pleasant North Jersey suburb approximately 1.5 miles off of I-287 and 1/4 mile off State Rt. 23. The telescope and mount are both quite large, so plan accordingly, vehicle-wise. One more thing: my husband had made me aware years ago of what he called “extreme fastidiousness” among some astronomy enthusiasts, especially eyepiece collectors. Please understand that this is a used telescope and these are used eyepieces, so if the very slight blemishes, optical imperfections and dust present would bother you no end, do us both a favor and please don’t place a offer. As this is vintage optical equipment, absolutely no warranty of any kind, on any of the items, is expressed or implied. There are no returns on any of these items, for any reason, period!
