Celestron Optical Glass 8” Solar Filter for Full Aperture use on C8
Up for sale and shown in the accompanying photos is an original equipment Celestron Optical Glass Solar Filter. I purchased this for my Celestron Super C8 Plus Telescope in the 1980s but never used it; therefore, this Celestron Optical Glass Solar Filter is in excellent new condition. It comes in its original box which will be packed inside another slightly larger box for shipping. Also included is a copy of the instructions for use.
The Celestron Scope Accessory Catalog in 1984 listed the 8” Solar Filter for sale at $425 and said this:
“The blazing hot surface of the sun can be safely observed both visually and photographically with the proper type of Celestron Solar Filter… This 8” Solar Filter is a full aperture solar filter for the C8 and is an accurate optical window made of high quality glass securely mounted in a metal cell. It is coated with Inconel (a nickel, cobalt, and iron alloy) which blocks the sun’s radiation uniformly at all wavelengths. This means you get a totally safe Solar Filter and one that shows you natural color. Since Celestron uses only polished optical glass that is tested to be flat and also not to degrade the image, you will get higher resolution with Celestron Solar Filters than those made of plastic or other materials… You may use a Celestron eyepiece filter or polarizing filter in addition to the solar filter to decrease glare and increase contrast or darken the image overall so that viewing is more comfortable or simply to better see specific features on the sun’s surface.”
Celestron made this full aperture filter as well as a sub-diameter filter. The full aperture filter is recommended if you contemplate solar photography because of the faster f/ratio – especially useful when you attempt eyepiece projection photography. During good to average seeing conditions, the full aperture solar filters will definitely give you a higher resolution view than the sub-diameter filter.
