Cells for Conical Primary Mirrors
The Optical Supports conical mirror cell has been designed and refined to provide a rigid yet light-weight mounting solution for Royce conical primary mirrors. Astrophotographers and visual observers alike will appreciate the stability and adjustability afforded by this cell. It has been specifically engineered to perform while adding an elegant and attractive component to any optical tube assembly. Two configurations are available: with or without an optional cooling fan.
Each cell features 6061-T6 aluminum construction, stainless steel mounting and collimation hardware, and a bead-blasted/anodized finish. Other features include adjustable mounting brackets, locking bolts to assist in retaining collimation adjustments, and a pattern of threaded holes for attaching an optional cooling fan.
The upper plate features a solid footprint area that is slightly larger than the flat-back diameter of each Royce conical primary mirror (respective to the individual specs of each aperture – more info. Similarly the central mounting hole also matches that required by each of the three supported conical apertures (i.e. 3/8-16 bolt for 8” conicals and ½-13 bolt for 10” and 12.5” conicals).
Adjustable mounting brackets provide a rigid and secure fit into the optical tube. They can adjust to accommodate a small range in inner diameter of your telescope tube (approximately 0.25” total range of motion). A pair of bolts secures each bracket to the lower plate, ensuring a straight track of adjustment.
A second benefit of adjustable mounting hardware is the auto-centering of the mirror cell. Each pair of bracket bolts, and subsequently the adjustment slots, is exactly centered on 120 degree radii from the primary mirror’s central mounting hole. If the user has accurately drilled mounting holes in the optical tube that are exactly 120 degrees apart, then he/she need only install the cell with bracket bolts loose in their sockets and slide the brackets as necessary to reach each hole in the tube wall. When all three holes are aligned to the brackets and fasteners inserted, each bracket will automatically be adjusted by an equal amount. The result is a perfectly centered mirror cell.
Cooling Package
For those desiring a convenient means to expedite the process of cooling the primary mirror to thermal equilibrium with ambient temperatures, an optional cooling package is available. This design takes advantage of aluminum’s natural ability as a good thermal conductor. The benefit is fully realized when combined with the optional cooling fan which blows directly onto the upper plate’s underside (beneath the footprint supporting the conical mirror’s flat-back), which acts as a heatsink for the primary mirror.
A 60mm fan is used with model #8CMC and an 80mm fan is used with model #10CMC and model #12CMC. Power is connected to the onboard RCA jack and can be supplied via any 12V source of your choosing, including many popular dew heating control panels which use RCA interconnects to power their heat strips. A 6-foot standard male/male RCA cable is included in the package.
