For auction is a rare small (model) electric motor with no maker's marks visible. I think it dates from about 1890-1900. This type of multiple ring armature was used by Emil Burgin in the 1880s.It has a four pole iron stator and a two ring Burgin armature, each ring having four coils. The drum-type commutator has copper gauze brushes which can be rotated about the drum to reverse the motor. The stator has four poles magnetised by two independent coils. It is mounted on a teak base.A rare, unusual and interesting survival. Please look at the photos to assess the structure and condition. The 150mm ruler gives an idea of its size.I have not tried to operate the motor nor carried out detailed tests on the coils. The coils look to be undamaged.

I have cleaned the commutator and can now say that the motor is working happily on 6V DC with no load.
The circuitry is: one terminal --- two field coils in parallel ---X--- one copper brush-commutator-other copper brush --- other terminal.
Point X is bonded to the frame. The field coils and armature are in series.
