Watson & Son / Gandolfi English Antique Mahogany & Brass 19th Century Plate Camera, Taylor, Taylor & Hobson Lens, Tripod and Accessories An early Watson \'\'Popular\'\' whole plate mahogany camera, lens, plate holders, hood, Marion dry plates, oak tripod & original leather case, which may be of interest to collectors.Manufactured by Watson & Sons circa 1885 - 1890 (or possibly sub-contracted to Gandolfi, according to my more knowledgable large format camera friends).The camera is fitted with a Taylor, Taylor & Hobson rapid rectilinear lacquered brass lens, the elements of which look to be in very good clean condition.The lens is marked, Patent, Taylor Taylor & Hobson, Leicester, No.9038 and 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 RR and EQ. FOC. 11.18 IN(The word \'\'Patent\'\' also appears to incorporate a Government Broad Arrow symbol - I\'m not sure of the significance of this).The ground glass screen measures 8 1/2\'\' x 6 1/2\'\', making this I believe, a whole plate camera.The bellows, mahogany body, lens and tripod appear to be in superb museum or exhibition quality condition.The skill and workmanship in the cameras construction is astonishing, note the beautifully jointed panels with brass screw slots all aligned in the same plane.Each leg of the heavy duty oak tripod is marked, \'\'S.B. Patent\'\'.The only fault I found is that one of the hinge pins is missing from a rear screen top hinge, replacement would be straightforward, I\'ll perhaps find time to replace this myself.Note that the Watson & Son leather case is in poor condition, having served well in protecting the camera over the last 125 years.Here for sale with a low start price and without reserve.Do ask questions as required and do please see my other antique art & items of interest.
