On offer is a fully cleaned, serviced & working English gilt brass pocket aneroid barometer and altimeter by A. Aronsberg, Manchester with 1 year guarantee
The dial of the barometer is silvered with black lettering, the hand is blue steel. It is marked:

The outer chapter ring is marked 0 to 8,000 and indicates your hight about sea level, the inner chapter ring is marked 23 to 31 and indicates the atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury.
The bezel and outer chapter ring rotates so you can record the relative changes in pressure or height. There is a screw on the rear to allow for calibration.
The barometer case is gilt brass.
This is a nice example of a late 19th century gilt brass compensated English pocket barometer and altimeter, in good overall condition:
- Barometer condition: good, there are no dents but a number of marks on the rear, some of the gilt finish has worn off the side. The front bezel rotates smoothly.
- Glass crystal: original glass, free of marks.
- Dial condition: very good, one or two very light marks near the centre.
- The barometer is in full working order and has been tested against a digital barometer set to inches of mercury, the results indicate that, within the limitation of an instrument made over 100 years ago, it is accurate.
- Barometer Size: 48mm (1.91 inches) in diameter and 17mm (0.70 inches) thick.
- Barometer weight: 98g (3.47 oz).
This instrument is the 19th century equivalent of GPS, Victorian men (it was nearly always men) would purchase this sort of instrument before embarking on an adventure, probably involving hill climbing, ballooning or mountaineering. This instrument could not only be used to predict the weather (rain, sun etc.) but was also able to indicate your height above sea level.
To measure your height you rotate the front bezel until the hand is aligned with the zero (assuming you are at sea level) then as you climb the hand moves owing to the drop in air pressure.
This pocket barometer is the 19th century equivalent of a GPS unit. It would have been carried by a Victorian lady or gentleman as they embarked on an adventure usually involving climbing, mountaineering or, for the very adventurous, ballooning.
