GOOD LARGE WORKING CROOKES TUBE:
$108.87

You are looking at one of a Crookes tubes to show the nature of an electrical discharge in an evacualed tube under higher pressure.

Sir William Crookes worked on the behaviour of electricity in evacuated tubes during the 1870s. This culminated in his lecture “On Radiant Matter” given before the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Sheffield on Friday August 22 1879. In his lecture he demonstrated his discovery of Radiant Matter, although he didn’t recognize that this radiant matter was what we now know as electrons. In his lecture he showed a pair of tubes, one with a high degree of vacuum and the other with a lower degree of vacuum.

This is the tube with the lower degree of vacuum that shows a curved string of purple discharge between whichever two of the four poles are connected as can be seen in the photographs.

The tube is 17” high with a bulb diameter of 6”. The wooden stand is 6” in diameter. The tube has no makers mark, but is undoubtedly East German from the Cold War years and made by Pressler or their successors, VEB Elektronische Spezialröhren. The tubes are labeled 7a and 7b after the illustration from the original Radiant Matter lecture. I should point out that the induction coil I used to power these tubes is not included in the sale.

If you are interested in these items more information can be found at Henk Dijkstra\'s excellent Cathode Ray Tube site.

This is a great opportunity to own a piece of early scientific history in working condition.
