Here\'s a pristine 1918 Signal Corps BC-14a crystal receiver. Introduced during the last years of World War One, the BC-14a played an important role in securing victory for the Allied Forces. When used in conjunction with an SCR-68 transceiver (located aboard an Allied aircraft flying overhead), the BC-14a alerted ground troops to the location of nearby enemy artillery positions. In production for less than two years, the BC-14a was manufactured under military contract by DeForest, Liberty, General Radio, Lowenstein and Wireless Specialty Apparatus Co. This particular example was manufactured by General Radio.
Condition is excellent to near mint throughout. The original black panel paint is intact and almost like new, with no evidence of flaking or wear. The panel lettering is crisp and legible everywhere. The panel itself is close to mint. No dings, no gouges, no missing or splintered wood. The original detector is working properly, and the glass housing is undamaged. The instruction sheet on the underside of the lid is intact and complete and legible everywhere.
The chassis is in mint condition, with no evidence of wear, no evidence of rust, no evidence of tampering or modification or repair. Pristine tuning components, pristine wiring, just beautiful throughout.
The cabinet is in excellent condition. No wood rot, no swollen corner joints, and no damage or distress anywhere. The cabinet\'s exterior may have been repainted, but if so, it was done decades ago. The hinges and lid latches have minimal oxidation, and the lid closes snugly over the receiver and locks down easily.
Included with the radio is a good Western Electric headset, an early Burgess \"D\" battery for the buzzer (the battery is for display only of course; it no longer has any juice) along with some extras that are seldom seen with this set, including the original servicing screwdriver, a spare glass housing for the detector, a spare catwhisker for the detector, spare galena crystals and the original spool of antenna wire.
That\'s about it. The radio will be packed with care, and I assure you it will arrive safely. I\'ve been shipping fragile antiques for years, and I know how to pack them properly. Buyers with hidden feedback or with no feedback should contact me before placing a bid.
