Description
VERY RARE 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE BOXWOOD & BRASS 2 FOOT 2 FOLD
EARLY EXAMPLE SPECIALIST SLIDE RULE FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY
MADE TO WILLIAM SLATER\'S PATTERN
BY SAMPSON ASTON, BIRMINGHAM
Circa 1850
Brass slide
Lovely hidden Inch scale in the well under the slide
Usual Slater features - numerous tables and instructions
Side \'Scales of Decimals\'
Scale marked arch hinge
All holding pins in place
A beautful example of a finely made mid-19th Century Engineer\'s boxwood and brass slide rule - designed specially for the Textile Industry, and made to Bolton-based Engineer William Slater\'s pattern by theprolific maker, Sampson Astion of Birmingham, England.
Along with Routledge, Noble, Hawthorn, Chadwick, Carrett, Wilkinson, Armstrong and Burt - this is one of the iconic specialist 2/2 rules produced throughout the 1800\'s. Slater rules differ from the others by the inclusion of many lines of instructions on the measuring surfaces. All of these rules have multiple tables of information. As Hopp says "Slater\'s rule carries a record-breaking amount of meticulously hand-stamped data and instructions on both sides of the instrument". As well as tables for thread and yarn size data, there are nine sets of specific calculating instructions.
The inch scales are sub-divided in 8ths and in 16ths. One side carries these inch scales, together with virtually two legs of tabular data. The reverse carries the slide, together with another entire leg taken up with various panels of instruction. Like other Slaters I have, this one has the hidden Inch scale in the well under the brass slide.
The slide moves firmly but smoothly, and as usual for these kind of high-end rules - is double-sided, with the reverse carrying an interesting scale that seems to me to be non-metric and non-imperial.
Condition: Great for age. Check the supersize pictures for condition. No previous owner\'s marks. Both holding pins in place. Joint as firm and secure as when manufactured. Usual occasional lumps and bumps associated with its considerable age.
A rare item from a very sought-after name.
As with all my items, this will be securely wrapped to get to you in the present condition.
