RARE NICOLAS BION FRENCH BRASS MATHMATICAL SECTOR RULE RULER INSTRUMENT c1700:

This is for an extremely rare early 18th century sector rule by the esteemed French instrument maker Nicolas Bion (c.1652–1733). Nicolas Bion made and sold mathematical instruments in Paris in his own shop and as royal maker for Louis XIV. He included a lengthy discussion of sectorial scales in his famous 1709 manual on the construction and use of mathematical instruments. Bion\'s son, Jean-Baptiste, took over the shop in 1731. This is a really well made, solid feeling and finely detailed example, and it is signed by Bion at the top. My knowledge ofFrench mathematical signage is limited so hopefully the photo\'s should clearly show the instruments capabilities. I am more fascinated by the beautiful aesthetics of the engravings, both the functional markings and the delicate little flourishes employed by the engraver. Inside the sector when you open it there is an ornately shaped fin to locate the two halves together. It is in lovely condition, all the engravings are clear, none are rubbed or faded, there is no play and it has a nice unpolished patinato the metal. Itmeasures 175mm x 32mm.
