I bought this scope for a quick grab and go planetary scope and it really excels for that purpose. As a serious amateur astronomer, I own several high end scopes(4"Apo triplet, 8"SCT, 12"Dob, etc.) that give amazing planetary views and I must say this little 90mm Mak gives a very comparable view. It travels so easily and sets up so quickly making it super convenient. I can literally take it out and be looking at stars in just seconds. I gave it 5 stars because I bought it for a specific purpose, knowing the characteristics and limitations of the scope, and it excels in that purpose. This scope has two significant disadvantages, narrow field of view and small aperture. Large star clusters( Pleiades, Double Cluster, etc.) certain nebula and other DSOs will not fit in the field of view. Only the brighter DSOs can be seen because of the small aperture. However, the view it gives is crisp and sharp with no sign of chromatic aberration. I commonly get excellent views of Jupiter and Saturn at 185x and it does well with the brighter globular clusters and splitting double stars. It's a great little scope within it's limitations.Read full review
Great unit for the price. All I need is a shorter eyepiece to get a better look at Jupiter and Saturn. Mars, would see orange with white pole areas. Need to get a better tripod.

I've owned many of these Orion Apex or StarMax scopes ~ the 90mm shown here, the 102mm and the 127mm MAKs. They offer incredible resolution and light throughput for the money. The mounts, if supplied are ample for astronomy and quite stable given the shortness and weight of the scopes. The Apex and Starmax are the same scope while the Apex is fitted with an erecting diagonal and the Starmax an astronomical 90 degree unit. This is a BEST BUY and if you want better - get a Questar - it may or may not be better as I've looked through a 90mm Questar and the images are virtually identical to the Orion scopes - no better - no worse!
Good beginner telescope. Light, compact, little color aberration.
