Having sold antiques for more than thirty years, we know that we\'re offering something really special in this set of twenty-five antique artificial glass eyes! From the collection of a local optometrist practicing right here in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in the early 20th century, we are gradually selling a number of items from his office -- including this incredible boxed set of glass human prosthetic eyes. As Rhode Island was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in America, one unfortunate byproduct of that success was a steady rate of accidents. Workers were injured in every conceivable way, and loss of one\'s eyesight was an unfortunate, but regular occurrence. But while medical science at the time couldn\'t necessarily save someone\'s injured eye, they could at least provide a cosmetic fix in fitting the person with a glass prosthetic one. This box, then, offered an assortment of colors for Dr. Tarbox to find a matching eye for a patient. As you can see in the photos, they vary in shape and color (gray, brown, hazel, and blue), and are all free of breaks and cracks. Take note that most of the eyes are lighter colors which are far more rare than the standard brown variety. Not only are they biologically accurate, each is a miniature work of art in how well they mimic actual eyes -- even the blood vessels in the sclera (the white part of the eye)! The eyes are in a black wooden box lined on the inside in green felt with the prominent label in gold leaf: \"Gesellschaft für Gumperts künstliche Augen\" (The Gumpert Artificial Eye Co.) WIEN VIENNA.\" The box measures 7\" x 6\" x 1\". On the outside of the box is a paper label reading \"REFORM EYES colors Brown, Blue, Gray $10.00\".
