On offer is a fully cleaned, serviced & working English gilt brass pocket aneroid barometer and altimeter in original case with 1 year guarantee
The dial of the barometer is silvered with black lettering, the hand is blue steel. It is marked:

The inner chapter ring is marked 22 to 31 and indicates the atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury, the outer chapter ring is marked 0 to 9,000 feet and indicates your height above sea level.
The bezel and blue steel pointer rotates so you can record the relative changes in pressure or height. There is a small screw on the rear to allow the barometer to be calibrated for different location.
The barometer case is gilt brass, the outer case is dark red leather with a blue velvet and cream silk lining.
This is a nice example of a late 19th century gilt brass English pocket barometer and altimeter in original case, in good overall condition:
- Barometer condition: good, the gilt finish is good with a few minor marks, there are no dents. There is a little damage to the case around the calibration screw hole. The bezel rotates smoothly.
- Glass crystal: bevelled glass, original, one or two very minor marks.
- Dial condition: fair, there are a number of marks and scratches.
- Case condition: fair, the leather has some damage. The catch works and the button is still covered by leather (repaired), but it needs some care to close the lid as there is some damaged to the clip on the lid. The hinge is good. The blue velvet lining is in good condition with some light fading, the cream silk lining is quite worn.
- The barometer is in full working order and has been tested against a digital barometer set to inches of mercury, the results indicate that, within the limitation of an instrument made over 100 years ago, it is accurate.
- Barometer Size: 47mm (1.84 inches) in diameter and 20mm (0.80 inches) thick.
- Barometer weight: 85g (3.02 oz).
This instrument is the 19th century equivalent of GPS, Victorian men (it was nearly always men) would purchase this sort of instrument before embarking on an adventure, probably involving hill climbing, ballooning or mountaineering. This instrument could not only be used to predict the weather (rain, sun etc.) but was also able to indicate your height above sea level.
This pocket barometer was the 19th century equivalent of a GPS unit. It would have been carried by a Victorian lady or gentlemen as they embarked on an adventure usually involving climbing, mountaineering or, for the very adventurous, ballooning.
The word \'COMPENSATED\' on the dial means that this barometer automatically adjusts the reading for changes in temperature, thereby giving a more accurate reading.
To measure your height you adjust the hand, via the rear calibration screw, until the hand points to zero (assuming you are at sea level). Then as you climb the hand will move anticlockwise to indicate your height.
